Cristiano Ronaldo is travelling back to England today to hold showdown talks withManchester United about his future.
The 37-year-old missed the club's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia and hasn't spoken to United boss Erik ten Hag since handing in a transfer request last month.
United have continually insisted that Ronaldo isn't for sale and that he will be an important part of their squad for the upcoming 2022/23 campaign, despite the Portugal international being desperate to spend the remaining years of his career playing Champions League football.
It's unclear if he will return to training this week, but Ronaldo is expected to have a face-to-face meeting with Ten Hag in the coming days to resolve the stand-off, one way or another.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG andBarcelona were among the elite clubs monitoring Ronaldo's situation earlier in the summer, though interest from all of them has since dissipated, leaving the five-time Ballon d'Or winner with few viable options.
According to The Athletic, United are treating the fact that the former Real Madrid and Juventus man is returning to Manchester this week as a sign that he'll withdraw his transfer request.
low.
Erik ten Hag insists Cristiano Ronaldo is part of his plans for next season.
Ronaldo scored 24 goals in all competitions last season, finishing as United's top scorer, but was often criticised for disrupting the team's tactical cohesion in his reluctance to press and work hard off the ball, and with Ten Hag keen to implement the same high-energy philosophy he used at Ajax, there are concerns he'll cause the same problems again next season if he stays.
Should United offload him, Red Bull Salzburg's Benjamin Sesko is thought to be top of their list of replacements. The 19-year-old only managed 11 goals last season, but after drawing comparisons to Manchester City's Erling Haaland, he might be worth the gamble.
